Smriti Mandhana appointed India women's captain as Harmanpreet Kaur resigns

Harmanpreet Kaur has resigned from captaincy of the Indian women’s cricket team across all three international formats. The decision follows a BCCI review meeting held in Guwahati, attended by officials including Secretary Devajit Saikia, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and head coach Amol Muzumdar. Kaur reportedly rejected a proposed split-captaincy model that would have seen her retain leadership in Tests and ODIs while stepping down for T20Is.

Smriti Mandhana has been appointed as the new full-time white-ball captain, tasked with leading the ODI and T20I sides. Mandhana, a veteran of the national team since 2013 and a successful WPL captain, will begin her tenure with the upcoming series against Zimbabwe.

Kaur’s leadership tenure included significant achievements, most notably leading India to their first Women’s ODI World Cup title in 2025 and securing gold medals at the 2023 and 2026 Asian Games. Despite stepping down from leadership roles, Kaur will continue to represent the Indian national team as a player.
