Indian women's cricket captaincy transition

Overview

Harmanpreet Kaur has resigned from her position as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all international formats. The decision followed a review meeting by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) involving officials such as Secretary Devajit Saikia and head coach Amol Muzumdar. While initial reports indicated Kaur may have rejected a split-captaincy model, the BCCI ultimately appointed Smriti Mandhana as the captain for all formats. Mandhana, a veteran player and successful WPL captain, succeeds Kaur, whose tenure included a 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup title and gold medals at the 2023 and 2026 Asian Games.

Mandhana is set to begin her tenure as full-time captain during a multi-format series against Zimbabwe. The T20I leg of the tour features three matches at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur on October 16, 18, and 20. This series marks the first time the venue has hosted a women’s international match and represents the first bilateral women's T20I series between the two nations. To encourage female spectators, the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh has announced free entry for women for all three T20I matches, following a suggestion from Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.

Mandhana noted the series is a vital learning experience to fine-tune the team's T20 approach ahead of the inaugural Women's Champions Trophy. Individual milestones are also in focus: Mandhana is 133 runs away from becoming the first batter to reach 5,000 runs in women’s T20Is, while Indian spinner N Sree Charani is three wickets away from becoming the first player from a Test-playing nation to take 50 T20I wickets in a single calendar year. Following the T20Is, the teams will move to Vadodara for a three-match ODI series starting October 23.
