Child development research examines pets, screen time, and parenting
Recent studies and psychological research highlight various factors influencing child development and family dynamics. A long-term Spanish study (INMA) involving nearly 1,900 families suggests that the impact of pets on children's mental health is complex. While initial data showed children without pets had better mental health indicators, this difference disappeared when adjusting for socioeconomic status and age. Notably, living with cats at ages four or five was linked to slightly more frequent mental health issues, though causality is unproven.
Regarding technology, research published in Family Relations indicates that parental stress is a key driver in children's screen time usage. Stressed parents are more likely to use devices to manage child behavior and are often less strict with digital rules. Additionally, a study by Inserm and the National University of Singapore found that excessive screen exposure at specific developmental ages—around one year and six years old—is linked to poorer school performance and weaker working memory in later childhood.
Communication and social development are also emphasized. Experts suggest using open-ended questions rather than broad inquiries like “How was school?” to foster better dialogue and emotional insight. Furthermore, research in the journal PNAS suggests that birth order may influence personality, with middle children often scoring higher in traits such as agreeableness, honesty, and modesty compared to oldest or youngest siblings.
