Harvey Weinstein faces sentencing in Manhattan sexual assault case
Harvey Weinstein is set to be sentenced in Manhattan following a legal process that has spanned several years. Manhattan prosecutors have recommended a 20-year prison sentence for the 74-year-old former Hollywood producer, who faces a maximum of 25 years for the sexual assault of Miriam Haley in 2006.
This sentencing follows the 2024 overturning of Weinstein's original 2020 conviction by New York's highest court due to procedural errors. In a subsequent trial, a jury convicted him of a first-degree criminal sex act against Haley but acquitted him of charges involving Kaja Sokola and could not reach a verdict regarding Jessica Mann. Prosecutors ultimately dropped the rape charge involving Mann after a hung jury in a recent retrial.
Weinstein, who currently uses a wheelchair due to health issues, continues to deny all allegations, maintaining that the sexual encounters were consensual. Separately, a California appeals court has ordered a re-evaluation of his 16-year sentence related to a 2013 case in Los Angeles.
