Harz region rail service suspended for track maintenance

The Harz region in Germany, a major destination for short trips, is undergoing infrastructure updates. Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) has announced that from August 31 to September 18, rail service between Schierke and the Brocken summit will be suspended. This interruption is necessary to install new rails and track ballast on an 1,100-meter section of track. While HSB typically performs major maintenance in November to minimize passenger impact, the decision to work in late summer was driven by the extreme climatic conditions at the Brocken, which allow for more reliable construction during warmer months.

During this period, no replacement bus service will be provided for the Schierke-to-Brocken route. However, trains between Wernigerode, Drei Annen Hohne, and Schierke will continue to operate according to the regular schedule.

The Harz region offers diverse attractions, including the Rammelsberg mine in Goslar, the historic town of Wernigerode, and the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Quedlinburg and Goslar. Tourism remains significant, with the Harz accounting for approximately one-third of all overnight stays in Saxony-Anhalt.
