Harzer Schmalspurbahnen infrastructure renovation

Overview

The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) is initiating significant infrastructure improvements on its Brocken line. The German federal government and the state of Saxony-Anhalt have committed approximately 10.9 million euros toward a multi-phase renovation project. The first phase, estimated to cost roughly 18.87 million euros, is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027 and involves renewing tracks, switches, sleepers, and platforms between Wernigerode and the Brocken.

In the interim, immediate maintenance is being conducted. From August 31 to September 18, rail service between Schierke and the Brocken summit will be suspended to allow for the installation of new rails and track ballast. This summer maintenance was scheduled to take advantage of warmer climatic conditions at the Brocken, despite the lack of a replacement bus service for that specific section. Regular service will continue between Wernigerode, Drei Annen Hohne, and Schierke.
