Hashdex to Liquidate US Spot Bitcoin ETF

Hashdex announced that its spot Bitcoin exchange‑traded fund (ticker DEFI) listed on NYSE Arca will be liquidated. The fund, launched in 2022 as the first US spot‑Bitcoin ETF, held only about $14.7 million in assets. Trading will cease after the market close on 17 August, and remaining Bitcoin holdings will be sold with cash distributions to shareholders expected around 28 August.

The decision follows an assessment of low assets under management, limited trading liquidity and operating costs, as well as a shift of investor capital toward higher‑return AI‑related assets. The closure may represent the first liquidation of a US spot Bitcoin offering since the SEC approved such products in January 2024.
