Hashim Thaçi and KLA leaders await war crimes verdict in The Hague

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague is scheduled to deliver a verdict on September 16 for former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Redžep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi. The defendants face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo and Albania between 1998 and 1999, including persecution, unlawful detention, torture, and murder. Prosecutors have previously sought 45-year prison sentences for the accused.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated he has information suggesting the verdict will be largely an acquittal, intended primarily to cover the defendants' time in detention. Vučić criticized the tribunal process, claiming it serves a Western agenda to shift blame for wartime crimes onto Serbs while exonerating other groups.

In Kosovo, public sentiment remains divided. While some segments of the population have planned marches and celebrations in anticipation of an acquittal, the trial has been marked by significant complexity, involving 270 witnesses and nearly 5,500 pieces of evidence.
