Hashim Thaçi faces six-year prison request in The Hague
The Specialized Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague are conducting final closing statements in the criminal case against former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi and several others. The defendants, including Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj, Fadil Fazliu, and Hajredin Kuçit, are accused of crimes against the administration of justice.
The Special Prosecutor's Office (SPO) has requested a six-year prison sentence for Hashim Thaçi, three-year sentences for Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj, and Fadil Fazliu, and a nine-month sentence for Hajredin Kuçit. Prosecutors allege the group attempted to influence witness testimony in a separate case involving war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Defense lawyers have argued for acquittal, stating that the evidence is weak and based on speculation. They contend that no concrete interference with the administration of justice was proven. Hashim Thaçi has defended his actions, stating that the creation of the Special Court was a necessary choice to avoid direct UN Security Council involvement and that the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) acted in self-defense against Serbian repression.
