Hattusa discovery: New fragment of Kadesh Peace Treaty found

Archaeologists in Hattusa, the ancient Hittite capital in Çorum, Türkiye, have discovered a new cuneiform tablet fragment belonging to the Kadesh Peace Treaty. The fragment, found near the Büyükkale royal citadel, is an Akkadian version of the historic agreement between Hittite King Hattusili III and Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II.

Following a year of scientific analysis, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that the fragment contains provisions from articles 12 to 20 of the treaty. These specific lines regulate the treatment of individuals fleeing from one empire to the other, including clauses regarding the protection of their homes from destruction.

The Kadesh Peace Treaty, dating back approximately 3,300 years, is recognized as one of the world’s earliest known written peace agreements. While the discovered piece is incomplete and a full academic transcription is pending, the find provides significant new insight into ancient diplomatic protocols regarding refugees and property rights.
