Kadesh Peace Treaty fragment discovery in Hattusa

Overview

Archaeologists in Hattusa, the ancient Hittite capital in Çorum, Türkiye, have discovered a cuneiform tablet fragment belonging to the Kadesh Peace Treaty. The fragment, found near the Büyükkale royal citadel, is an Akkadian version of the historic agreement between Hittite King Hattusili III and Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses II.

Following scientific analysis, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that the fragment contains provisions from articles 12 to 20 of the treaty. These specific lines regulate the treatment of individuals fleeing from one empire to the other, including clauses regarding the protection of their homes from destruction. The discovery, which relates to the treaty following the Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BCE, provides new insight into ancient diplomatic protocols regarding refugees and property rights.
