Havana hosts book fair and ALBA assembly for Fidel Castro centenary

Havana, Cuba, will host two major events in August 2026 marking the 100th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s birth. The International Book Fair runs from 10 to 16 August under the motto “Leer es crecer,” featuring millions of titles, e‑book showcases, and awards ceremonies. Russia will be the guest of honor alongside delegations from China, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil and Spain, and the fair will display parts of the Russian cinematic heritage in partnership with the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC).

From 6 to 9 August, the ALBA Movimientos organization will hold its IV Continental Assembly in Havana, gathering more than 150 delegates from 25 countries. The gathering, themed “Cien años caminando con Fidel,” aims to strengthen popular unity across the region and address the ongoing economic blockade imposed on Cuba. The assembly will discuss social, indigenous, urban, student and feminist issues, positioning the event as a political response to external pressures and a celebration of the revolutionary legacy.
