Havana man detained after protesting at National Assembly
A man was detained by police on Friday after staging a solo protest at the National Assembly of People's Power building in Havana. The individual walked from Calle Monte to the steps of the Capitolio Nacional carrying a sign that read “Abajo la Dictadura” (Down with the Dictatorship) on one side and messages against political discrimination and for freedom on the other.
Witnesses and video footage show the man being intercepted by four police officers at the base of the building's stairs. As he was being placed into a patrol vehicle, he shouted “¡Abajo la dictadura!”, a sentiment echoed by some members of the surrounding crowd. The area surrounding the Capitolio is known for having some of the most intensive security operations in Cuba.
The incident follows a pattern of individual acts of dissent in the country. Recent examples include Luis Robles, who demanded the release of rapper Denis Solís, and various artists attempting performances against Decree 349. According to the Cuban Observatory of Conflicts (OCC), the country has seen significant social unrest, documenting 663 protests or expressions of criticism in September 2026 alone.
