Political dissent and detention in Havana, Cuba
Overview
In early October 2026, a man was detained in Havana after staging a solo protest at the National Assembly of People’s Power building. The individual carried a sign with messages such as “Abajo la Dictadura” (Down with the Dictatorship) and slogans against political discrimination. Witnesses reported the man was intercepted by police at the base of the Capitolio Nacional stairs.
Following the incident, the individual, identified as 53-year-old Ariel Limias Leyva, was formally charged with “enemy propaganda against the constitutional order.” His family reported that he was being held incommunicado at the Villa Marista State Security headquarters. In response to the protest, authorities reportedly increased police surveillance and presence in the high-traffic areas surrounding the Capitolio.
