Havensteder plans demolition of 30 social rental homes

The housing corporation Havensteder plans to demolish 30 social rental homes located on Meidoornsingel. The houses, built in 1955, have estimated values ranging from 504,000 to 588,000 euros according to WOZ data.

Havensteder justifies the demolition by stating that renovating and making the properties sustainable is an unprofitable investment. In response, the political party SP, led by Emin Başoğlu, is protesting the decision and campaigning with residents to demand proper maintenance instead of demolition. Meanwhile, the corporation intends to rebuild at least 90 homes on the site, including 30 social housing units and a larger number of mid-segment rental homes.

In a nearby area, Schiebroek Zuid, the corporation Hef Wonen aims to demonstrate that renovating single-family homes from the same era is a viable alternative to demolition.
