Social housing developments in the Netherlands

Developments regarding social housing in the Netherlands involve both the repurposing of existing structures and the demolition of older properties.

In The Hague, Haag Wonen has started transforming a former school on Boylestraat into 24 social rental homes. The project includes adding a residential floor to increase density while preserving the building’s facade. Half of these units are intended for youth transitioning from social shelters to independent living, supported by the care institution JIT.

In a separate development, the housing corporation Havensteder plans to demolish 30 social rental homes on Meidoornsingel, citing that renovation and sustainability upgrades are “unprofitable.” This decision has met opposition from the political party SP, which is campaigning alongside residents for better maintenance. Havensteder intends to rebuild at least 90 homes on the site, consisting of 30 social housing units and a larger number of mid-segment rental homes. Concurrently, the corporation Hef Wonen is attempting to demonstrate that renovating similar single-family homes is a viable alternative to demolition in the Schiebroek Zuid area.
