Hawaiʻi Island continues utility restoration after Hurricane Lala

Recovery efforts are underway on Hawaiʻi Island following Hurricane Lala, with utility crews working to restore essential services.

Hawaiian Electric has made progress in restoring power, including service to Kaʻū Hospital and the Pāhala area. While approximately 1,430 to 2,920 customers remain without electricity depending on the latest reporting period, crews have successfully restored service to numerous communities such as Volcano, Hawaiian Ranchos, and Puakō. To support these efforts, military transport has delivered utility trucks and equipment from California to Hilo.

Simultaneously, the Hawaiʻi County Department of Water Supply is working to restore water services. Power has been returned to key infrastructure in Mountain View and Pāhala, allowing for the resumption of normal water use in those locations. However, a precautionary boil water notice remains in effect for customers in Nāʻālehu, Waiohinu, Discovery Harbor, Mark Twain Subdivision, Green Sands Subdivision, and South Point Road areas. Crews are currently working to expand service incrementally and locate waterline breaks.
