Hawaii braces for Tropical Storm Moke amid Hurricane Lala recovery

Hawaii is facing a renewed threat from Tropical Storm Moke, which formed in the Pacific on Friday. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and winds to the islands, with the Big Island likely to experience the most significant impacts. Forecasters predict rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches on the windward and southeast sides of the Big Island, with isolated amounts reaching up to 15 inches.

The new storm arrives as residents continue to recover from Hurricane Lala, which caused widespread destruction, including two deaths and significant flooding. Recovery efforts are ongoing, including a multi-agency operation to recover 69 sets of human remains unearthed at Na‘alehu Cemetery by Lala's flooding. Additionally, local schools, including Nā‘ālehu Elementary and Ka‘ū High & Pāhala Elementary, remain closed due to damage and utility outages.

U.S. Representative Jill Tokuda has called for a reassessment of the state's disaster preparedness, emphasizing the need to harden infrastructure against future natural disasters in light of the severe damage observed in the Ka‘u region.
