Hawaii receives federal disaster declaration after Tropical Cyclone Lala

President Donald Trump has approved a federal emergency declaration for Hawaii following the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone Lala. The declaration authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide assistance to Hawaii County, Maui County, and the City and County of Honolulu to protect public health, safety, and property.

Tropical Cyclone Lala, which functioned as a Category 1 hurricane near the Big Island before transitioning into a strong tropical storm, has caused an estimated $81.4 million in damage across the state. The Big Island has reported approximately $49.3 million in damages, followed by Oahu at $25.6 million and Maui at $6.4 million. The storm resulted in two fatalities and significant structural damage, particularly in the Kau district.

Under the declaration, FEMA is authorized to provide emergency protective measures at 75% federal funding. Requested resources include Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team specialists to assist with recovery at Nāʻālehu Cemetery, large-capacity emergency generators, and technical support to establish microgrids or temporary power systems for critical facilities.
