Hawaii recovers from Hurricane Lala's destructive flooding and power outages

Hurricane Lala has left a trail of destruction across the Hawaiian Islands, causing significant flooding, landslides, and power outages. While the storm weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm, its impact remains severe, particularly on the Big Island. Governor Josh Green noted that flooding, mud, and rock caused more destruction than the wind in areas like Na‘alehu, Pahala, and Waiohinu.

At least two deaths have been linked to the storm, including a 90-year-old woman in Naalehu and a man in his 60s found in a pasture. The flooding also caused significant damage to the Na‘alehu cemetery, where headstones and remains were reportedly displaced.

Infrastructure damage is widespread. Hawaiian Electric reported extensive damage to transmission lines, leaving thousands without power across the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu. In some remote areas, repairs could take up to two weeks. Transportation has been heavily impacted, with washed-out roads and bridges, including a section of the Mamalahoa Highway in Pahala.

As recovery efforts continue, officials have issued boil water notices for several areas, including Waiohinu and Na‘alehu. Meanwhile, meteorologists are monitoring a new tropical disturbance southeast of the islands that could potentially threaten Hawaii again by the weekend.
