Hawaii hit by Tropical Storm Lala, damaging over 100 homes

Tropical Storm Lala has caused widespread destruction across Hawaii after passing near the Big Island. Although the storm did not make landfall, its hurricane-force gusts and torrential rains resulted in at least 100 homes being damaged or swept from their foundations, particularly in coastal communities like Na’alehu and Wai’ohinu.

Infrastructure damage is significant, with reports of collapsed bridges, washed-out roads, and downed trees and power lines. These disruptions have left between 130,000 and 200,000 customers without electricity across the islands. In some areas, such as near Pahala, road damage has isolated thousands of residents.

Governor Josh Green announced that all state and county offices, schools, and courts would remain closed on Monday to allow for recovery efforts. While the storm has weakened to a tropical storm, authorities warn of lingering hazards, including flash flooding, landslides, and dangerous surf conditions. Aviation was also impacted, with over 190 flights canceled or postponed during the storm's passage.
