Hawk Fire expands to 10,000+ acres near California-Nevada border

The Hawk Fire, a fast-moving wildfire near the California-Nevada border, has expanded significantly, reaching over 10,500 acres with 0% containment as of Saturday night. The blaze, which erupted northeast of Verdi, has threatened approximately 1,000 homes and caused power outages in the region.

In Nevada, Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County. Mandatory “Go Now” evacuation orders have been issued for areas north of Verdi and northwest of Somersett, including parts of Reno, the North Valleys, and the Somersett community. An evacuation center has been established at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

In California, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office issued “Get Set” evacuation warnings for Zones E024 and E061, covering the Verdi and Long Valley areas. High winds and low humidity have been cited as primary factors driving the rapid spread of the flames, complicating containment efforts by local, state, and federal agencies.
