Hawk Fire expands to 10,000+ acres near CA-NV border

Overview

The Hawk Fire initially broke out in El Dorado County, California, burning through grass and vineyards. The blaze reached approximately 45 acres within two hours of being reported, leading to mandatory evacuations in the Somerset area and warnings for surrounding zones. While CAL FIRE reported that forward progress had been stopped and one outbuilding was destroyed, the cause remained under investigation.

By late August, the fire expanded significantly to approximately 2,500 acres near the California-Nevada border. Driven by high winds and low humidity, the fire erupted northeast of Verdi in Washoe County, Nevada. Containment was reported at 0%, prompting mandatory “Go Now” evacuation orders in Nevada and “Get Set” warnings in Sierra County, California.

As of Saturday night, the wildfire has expanded to over 10,500 acres with 0% containment. The fast-moving blaze has threatened approximately 1,000 homes and caused regional power outages. In response to the escalation, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County. Mandatory “Go Now” evacuation orders remain in effect for areas north of Verdi and northwest of Somersett, including parts of Reno, the North Valleys, and the Somersett community. An evacuation center has been established at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. In California, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office has issued “Get Set” evacuation warnings for Zones E024 and E061, covering the Verdi and Long Valley areas.
