Hazelnut prices in Turkey show significant gap between free market and TMO rates

Hazelnut prices in Turkey's free market are showing significant discrepancies compared to the reference prices set by the Turkish Grain Board (TMO). In Trabzon, the gap has reached up to 85 TL per kilogram, with free market prices for Levant quality falling to 165 TL against the TMO reference of 250 TL.

In Giresun and Ordu, free market rates also remain below TMO levels. Giresun's Tombul hazelnut is trading between 197-210 TL, while the TMO price is 255 TL. In Ordu, 50-yield shelled hazelnuts are fetching 175-180 TL, compared to the TMO Levant quality price of 250 TL.

In the Samsun region, prices vary by district and variety. As of August 31, 2026, Samsun center reported Tombul prices at 164.50 TL, Levant at 160.25 TL, and Sivri at 155.50 TL. Other districts like Çarşamba, Salıpazarı, and Terme show similar localized variations.

Agricultural representatives, including members of the Union of Turkish Chambers of Agriculture, have criticized large buyers for exerting downward pressure on prices. Producers are calling for more effective intervention from the TMO and investigations into market competition to offset rising costs for fertilizer, fuel, and labor.
