Turkey produce price pressures and producer losses
Overview
By late September 2026, economic strain on Turkish agriculture continued to impact various sectors. Sugar beet producers in Niğde requested prices of 4,000 to 4,500 Turkish Liras per unit to offset rising costs, while state-backed Tarım Kredi Marketleri reported a net loss of over 1.09 billion Turkish Liras in the first half of 2026, leading to 30 branch closures and 1,808 job losses.
Allegations of market manipulation have intensified in the hazelnut sector due to a persistent gap between free market rates and Turkish Grain Board (TMO) purchase prices. For the 2026/2027 season, the TMO set rates at 255 TL for Giresun quality and 250 TL for Levant quality. As of early October 2026, a significant disparity remains between these official rates and free market trading.
Regional market prices continue to fluctuate below TMO levels. In Giresun, 50-yield hazelnuts are trading at approximately 185 TL/kg. In Ordu, prices are around 180 TL/kg, while in Samsun, Levant quality hazelnuts are priced near 180 TL/kg. In Trabzon, rates are approximately 175.50 TL/kg, and Western Black Sea provinces such as Düzce, Sakarya, and Zonguldak report prices between 180 and 185 TL/kg.
In response to this gap, producers are weighing whether to sell to the TMO—which offers higher base prices and additional payments for higher yields—or to wait for shifts in the free market. The Ministry of Trade has deployed inspectors to investigate the discrepancies. Local officials attribute price declines to garden rot, diseases, pests like the brown marmorated stink bug, and concerns regarding Turkey’s declining global market share.
