HBO Max Unveils 'Carlota' Series on Mexico's Empress Carlota

HBO Max released the first official images of "Carlota," a new historical drama produced by Sony Pictures Television. The ten‑episode series stars Belinda as Empress Carlota of Belgium, with Jaime Lorente playing Maximiliano, and supporting roles for Miguel Ángel Silvestre and Mabel Cadena. Filming took place over 17 weeks at more than 40 locations across Latin America and Europe, involving a large cast and crew that included over 1,300 extras, musicians, dancers and stunt performers.

The production aims to reinterpret the 19th‑century story with a contemporary visual style, emphasizing Carlota’s political agency and personal ambitions. By casting a high‑profile Mexican pop star and notable actors, the series seeks to bring renewed public attention to the largely overlooked Mexican empress and reshape her portrayal in popular memory.
