HCFMRP-USP resident suspended for mocking patient weight on social media

Guilherme Lourenço Monteiro, a medical resident at the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo (HCFMRP-USP) in Ribeirão Preto, has been suspended following a social media post that mocked a patient's weight.

On September 21, Monteiro posted an image of a medical record on X (formerly Twitter), displaying sensitive data including the patient's weight, height, and Body Mass Index (BMI). The post, which garnered over 100,000 views before being deleted, was intended by the resident to illustrate the types of situations healthcare professionals face in the unit.

The hospital has classified the conduct as discriminatory and inadequate, stating that it does not align with the institution's professional standards. Following the incident, the Anesthesiology Residency Program supervisor temporarily removed the resident from his duties, and his social media accounts were closed.

Legal experts and medical authorities note that the post likely violates the Medical Code of Ethics and the General Data Protection Law (LGPD), as health information is considered sensitive data. The Regional Medical Council of São Paulo (Cremesp) has launched a confidential inquiry into the matter. While the patient's name was not explicitly shared, experts warn that the combination of specific clinical data could still allow for identification.
