HD 156295 b: Potential planet found in habitable zone of hot star

Astronomers have identified a potential exoplanet, designated HD 156295 b, located within the habitable zone of the star HD 156295. If confirmed, this would be the first known planet in the habitable zone of a massive A-type star and the hottest star ever discovered to host such a body.

The star HD 156295 is located 140 light-years from Earth and is approximately nine times more luminous than the Sun, with surface temperatures reaching nearly 7,500 degrees Celsius (13,500 degrees Fahrenheit). The star is a Delta Scuti variable, meaning its brightness pulsates with a regular rhythm.

HD 156295 b is described as a gas giant, potentially six times more massive than Jupiter. It orbits its star at a distance of roughly four astronomical units—four times the distance between Earth and the Sun—completing an orbit every 2,200 days. The planet receives about 60 percent of the radiation that Earth receives from the Sun.

The discovery was made by analyzing data from approximately 16,500 Delta Scuti stars using NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Researchers utilized the pulsation timing method, which detects minute variations in a star's light arrival time caused by the gravitational influence of orbiting bodies.
