Exoplanet discoveries and planetary research
Overview
Astronomers have reported two significant exoplanet discoveries. On September 27, researchers identified HD 3167 b, a rocky “lava world” located 154 light-years away in the Pisces constellation. This super-Earth orbits a K-type star every single Earth day.
On September 30, new data from the James Webb Space Telescope indicated that HD 3167 b possesses an atmosphere. Despite intense stellar wind and high-energy photons, the planet is cooler than expected, suggesting the atmosphere dissipates heat from the star-facing side to the night side.
Additionally, researchers identified a potential gas giant, HD 156295 b, located 140 light-years from Earth. Using NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the pulsation timing method, scientists found the planet orbits within the habitable zone of the massive, highly luminous Delta Scuti variable star HD 156295. If confirmed, HD 156295 b—which may be six times more massive than Jupiter—would be the first known planet in the habitable zone of such a hot star. The planet completes an orbit every 2,200 days and receives approximately 60 percent of the radiation Earth receives from the Sun.
In a related study on astrobiology, researchers suggested that the complexity of life on exoplanets may depend on cumulative photosynthetic energy rather than planetary age. Of 29 nearby exoplanets studied, only GJ 1061c and K2-3d were identified as having the potential to host life more advanced than Earth’s current stage.
