HD Hyundai Samho hands over inaugural 93,000‑m³ ammonia carrier to Maersk

South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Samho has delivered its first very large ammonia carrier, named Jane Maersk, to Danish shipping group Maersk. The 93,000‑cubic‑metre vessel, 221 m long and 36.5 m wide, can transport both liquefied ammonia and LPG and includes specialized safety systems such as a high‑level alarm to prevent over‑filling during loading.

The delivery marks the first of five VLACs ordered by Maersk in November 2023 and is part of a broader plan for ten carriers by September 2028. HD Hyundai Samho reports that it has secured orders for 30 vessels worth $4.08 billion this year, with its VLAC order book now at 22 ships valued at about $2.55 billion. The vessel underscores growing industry confidence that global ammonia trade will expand as the fuel is seen as a low‑carbon option for maritime propulsion, provided it is produced with renewable energy.

The launch of the Jane Maersk highlights the emerging market for next‑generation, environmentally focused gas carriers and positions the shipbuilder as a key supplier for the future clean‑fuel shipping sector.
