Ammonia-fuel cargo ship rollout
Entities: liquefied ammonia · HD Hyundai Samho · Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) · Maersk · Jane Maersk
Overview
In July 2026 the first commercial voyage of a dual‑fuel ammonia carrier was completed when EXMAR’s 46,000 m³ gas ship Antwerpen sailed from China to India delivering 30,214 tonnes of liquid ammonia. The vessel, equipped with a main engine running on ammonia and auxiliary units on conventional fuel, demonstrated the practical operation of low‑carbon ammonia propulsion and incorporated extensive safety systems.
A few days later South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Samho handed over a much larger 93,000 m³ very large ammonia carrier, Jane Maersk, to Danish shipping group Maersk. The 221‑metre vessel can also carry LPG and features advanced over‑filling alarms, marking the first of five ships ordered by Maersk and part of a broader plan for ten vessels by 2028. The delivery underscores growing confidence in a expanding global ammonia trade as a renewable‑energy‑based marine fuel and positions the builder as a key supplier for the emerging clean‑fuel shipping market.
