Health authorities monitor Hepatitis A and Coxsackie virus outbreaks
Health authorities in Ecuador and Bolivia are monitoring viral outbreaks in their respective regions. In Cotopaxi, Ecuador, 119 cases of Hepatitis A have been reported so far in 2026, representing a 25% increase compared to 2025. The highest incidence is among children and adolescents up to 18 years old. Officials noted that while the Ministry of Public Health provides Hepatitis B vaccines, the Hepatitis A vaccine is currently not offered by the ministry. The disease is primarily transmitted through contaminated food or water.
In Oruro, Bolivia, the Departmental Health Service (Sedes) has intensified epidemiological surveillance in schools following approximately 100 reported cases of the Coxsackie virus. While the number of active patients has decreased to 15, authorities are focusing on students aged five to 13 and children under five. Preventive measures include frequent handwashing, cleaning utensils, and requiring sick students to remain at home to prevent further spread.
