Viral outbreaks in Bolivia and Ecuador
Overview
Health authorities in Bolivia and Ecuador are monitoring various viral outbreaks. In Bolivia, the La Paz department reported an increase in respiratory and viral infections among children, including 11 cases of Coxsackie virus and approximately 20,000 cases of influenza among children aged five to 14. In El Alto, suspected Coxsackie cases were linked to specific educational units, prompting epidemiological investigations.
By mid-October, surveillance intensified in Oruro, Bolivia, following approximately 100 reported cases of Coxsackie virus. While active cases in Oruro decreased to 15, officials continued focusing on students aged five to 13 and children under five. Simultaneously, authorities in Ecuador reported 119 cases of Hepatitis A in Cotopaxi, a 25% increase from the previous year, primarily affecting individuals up to 18 years old. Officials noted that while Hepatitis B vaccines are available, the Hepatitis A vaccine is not currently offered by the ministry.
In Tarija, Bolivia, National Director of Epidemiology Roberto Márquez reported that there are currently no confirmed cases of Coxsackie virus in the region. However, he urged the public, particularly parents of children aged 5 to 10, to reinforce personal hygiene and handwashing to prevent transmission, noting the virus has appeared in La Paz, Oruro, and Chuquisaca.
