Health authorities warn against risks of self-medication

Health authorities in Peru and Mexico have issued warnings regarding the dangers of self-medication.

In Peru, the Ministry of Health, through Digemid, specifically cautioned against administering medications to individuals with Alzheimer's without medical supervision. Officials noted that unauthorized drugs—including common treatments for allergies, pain, or anxiety—can exacerbate confusion, disorientation, and drowsiness, significantly increasing the risk of falls and fractures. Lida Hildebrandt, director of Digemid, emphasized that new drugs should never be added to a treatment plan without professional evaluation due to potential adverse interactions.

Similarly, the Secretariat of Health in Mexico warned that consuming drugs based on recommendations from social media, friends, or family can lead to incorrect diagnoses, allergic reactions, and intoxications. The agency highlighted the specific danger of misusing antibiotics, which contributes to antimicrobial resistance and is ineffective against viral infections. Authorities urged the public to follow prescribed dosages strictly and to consult professionals before modifying or suspending any medical treatment.
