Health experts warn of muscle loss and risks from weight loss medications
Health experts and regulatory bodies are addressing the rising use of GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, for weight loss. While effective, a systematic review involving over 15,000 participants indicates that rapid weight loss via these drugs can lead to a significant reduction in lean muscle mass. Specialists warn that the suppressed appetite can make it difficult to maintain necessary protein intake, necessitating strength training and nutritional monitoring.
In response to the popularity of these 'weight loss pens,' Anvisa has prohibited several unregistered capsules and teas marketed with names like 'Milagroso Ervas Mounjaro' that falsely claim similar effects. Additionally, a growing parallel market for medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro has emerged, driven by high costs and the difficulty of obtaining prescriptions, posing risks of counterfeit or unsafe products.
The surge in weight loss trends has also raised concerns regarding mental health. Experts highlight the risks of eating disorders—including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating—which affect 1% to 3% of the population. There is also growing concern that constant exposure to images of extreme thinness on social media can negatively impact the body image and self-perception of adolescents.
