Health experts discuss sleep hygiene and insomnia treatments

Health experts are providing guidance on sleep hygiene and potential new treatments for insomnia. Regarding bedding, dermatologists and sleep psychologists recommend changing bed sheets at least once a week, or every 10 days at most. This frequency helps prevent the accumulation of dust, sweat, oils, bacteria, and allergens like mites. Individuals with skin conditions such as acne or allergies, or those living with pets, may need to change them even more frequently.

In clinical research, a study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine suggests that fecal microbiota transplants could potentially aid those suffering from chronic insomnia. The research indicates that the gut microbiota influences brain rest by regulating the immune system and producing vital neurotransmitters. In a clinical trial involving 40 participants, a majority reported substantial improvements in sleep quality between two and six months after receiving the transplant.
