Health experts prioritize muscle mass preservation over weight loss
Health experts are shifting the focus of weight loss evaluation from total kilograms lost to the preservation of muscle mass. Endocrinologist Patricia Gracitelli emphasizes that analyzing body composition is essential to ensure strength, functionality, and metabolic quality during weight reduction.
This change in perspective follows the increased popularity of obesity medications. It is critical to distinguish between fat loss and muscle loss, as muscle mass directly impacts mobility and the ability to perform daily tasks. This concern is particularly high for women undergoing climacteric and menopause; after age 40, declining estrogen levels can influence body composition and promote the loss of lean mass, even if the scale weight remains stable.
To maintain autonomy and prevent functional decline, specialists recommend strength training, such as weightlifting, and ensuring adequate protein intake. Gracitelli notes that a healthy body is not necessarily the thinnest, and that preserving functional capacity is a priority for long-term quality of life.
