Overview
By late July 2026, health experts reinforced earlier warnings that nighttime heat waves—when indoor temperatures stay above 20 °C—disrupt seniors’ sleep, increase fatigue, and heighten fall risk. They added practical steps: keep bedroom temperatures between 19 °C and 22 °C, ventilate early mornings or late evenings, use fans without directing airflow straight at the body, and limit heat‑generating appliances.
The same period saw renewed emphasis on early‑onset sarcopenia, which can begin in the thirties with a 3–8 % loss of muscle mass per decade. Comprehensive prevention guidance now stresses a blend of resistance training (weight‑lifting, body‑weight, bands), regular aerobic activity (walking, swimming, cycling), and nutrition rich in high‑quality protein from both animal and plant sources. Adequate intake of vitamin D, magnesium and potassium, proper hydration, sufficient sleep, and limited alcohol consumption are also highlighted as protective.
In Mexico City, the Instituto Nacional de Geriatría (INGER) launched a multidisciplinary program targeting sarcopenic obesity. Participants receive strength, body‑composition, balance and gait assessments, followed by personalized nutrition counseling, supervised therapeutic exercise, and management of comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, aiming to preserve mobility, independence and quality of life for older adults.
