Health experts warn of rising school illnesses

Medical experts are warning of an expected rise in illnesses as children return to schools and nurseries. Respiratory infections, including coughs, colds, and fevers, typically account for up to 70% of all pediatric illnesses.

Epidemiologist Roman Prymula noted that while respiratory virus outbreaks are common in the autumn when children are re-exposed to new viruses, the situation is not expected to be severe due to the current season. However, he highlighted Hepatitis A as a significant concern. Additionally, he warned that poor hygiene during summer holidays could lead to the spread of parasites like fleas.

Dr. Daniela Pousková from the Hospital of St. George in Plzeň advised that illness rates usually climb two to three weeks after the school year begins. She emphasized the importance of allowing children to fully recover at home to avoid complications such as ear infections, sinus inflammation, or pneumonia. Parents are encouraged to support immunity through adequate sleep, physical activity, healthy nutrition, and proper hygiene.
