Health experts warn of risks associated with dietary supplement overuse

Health experts are warning that the rising popularity of dietary supplements, driven by social media influencers and wellness culture, may lead to unintended health risks. While supplements can be beneficial, specialists note that excessive consumption of vitamins, minerals, and herbal products can cause more problems than they solve.

Pharmacists highlight that being ‘natural’ does not guarantee safety. Specifically, calcium and biotin (vitamin B7) are noted for their potential to interfere with medical treatments and diagnostics. Calcium can negatively affect the absorption of certain medications, such as those used for thyroid conditions, while biotin can influence the accuracy of laboratory blood test results.

Factors contributing to the surge in supplement use include the influence of platforms like Instagram and TikTok, a post-pandemic focus on preventive health, and an aging population seeking longevity. Experts advise that more is not always better and emphasize the importance of monitoring how supplements interact with prescribed medications.
