Health experts warn of risks from herbal teas and artificial sweeteners
Medical experts are issuing warnings regarding the unregulated consumption of herbal teas, dietary supplements, and artificial sweeteners due to potential impacts on kidney and brain health.
Nephrology specialist Prof. Dr. Aydın Türkmen of the Turkish Kidney Foundation noted that kidneys filter approximately 180 liters of fluid daily, making them highly sensitive to the contents of ingested products. Experts warn that herbal products, such as green tea, hibiscus, licorice, and senna, can affect fluid balance, potassium levels, and blood pressure. There are also concerns regarding contamination with heavy metals, pesticides, or undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients in some supplements.
Separately, a study published in the journal Neurology indicates that certain artificial sweeteners are linked to accelerated cognitive decline. Research led by Dr. Claudia Kimie Suemoto at the University of São Paulo, involving nearly 13,000 adults, found that high consumption of specific sweeteners was associated with a 62 percent increase in the rate of mental decline. The study identified aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, erythritol, sorbitol, and xylitol as substances linked to these effects.
