Health impacts of sparkling water consumption
While sparkling water is generally considered a healthier alternative to sugary sodas, excessive consumption can lead to certain health issues. According to data from the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, drinking too much sparkling water may cause digestive discomfort, such as bloating and gas, due to the carbon dioxide increasing gas in the digestive tract.
For individuals prone to acid reflux, sparkling water can act as a trigger, potentially worsening symptoms. Additionally, the carbonation process can affect dental health. Research from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics indicates that while sparkling water causes a temporary drop in salivary pH, the effect is significantly less severe than that of sugary sodas. In studies comparing various beverages, sparkling water—especially when enriched with calcium—showed much lower risks of tooth enamel erosion compared to traditional soft drinks, with pH levels typically returning to normal within 20 minutes.
