Health initiatives provide free cataract surgeries in Ghana and Nigeria

Health outreach programs in Ghana and Nigeria are providing free cataract surgeries and medical screenings to address avoidable blindness in vulnerable populations.

In Ghana’s Nabdam District, the “Nabdam Health Summit 2026” conducted a six-day screening across five communities. The initiative, funded by Member of Parliament Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane in partnership with the Haven of Love Children's Foundation, screened 1,447 residents. The program identified 199 individuals requiring cataract surgery and provided blood pressure checks, diabetes screenings, and National Health Insurance Scheme registration.

In Nigeria, an intervention in Edo State is providing free cataract surgeries to at least 200 residents, including children. Sponsored by the Tantita & Jovason Group, the Africa Cataract & Eye Foundation, and the Edo State Government, the surgeries are being held at Edo Specialist Hospital and a facility in Ologbo. Medical experts involved in the program have emphasized the importance of early intervention, particularly for children, to prevent permanent visual impairment and brain development issues.
