Measles and syphilis outbreaks trigger health alerts in Latin America and Spain

Public health authorities in several regions are responding to outbreaks of infectious diseases. In Guatemala, a measles outbreak has resulted in 32,566 confirmed cases and 32 deaths, with high incidence in Izabal and Sololá. The Pan American Health Organization has urged countries in the Americas to strengthen vaccination and surveillance as regional cases reach a two-decade high.

In Peru, the Ministry of Health has issued an epidemiological alert due to rising measles cases, particularly in Puno and Arequipa. Additionally, health experts suggest Peru could save up to US$20 million annually by switching to direct vaccine procurement for influenza rather than using the Pan American Health Organization's revolving fund.

Argentina is facing a significant resurgence of syphilis, with cases potentially reaching 80,000 this year. Experts attribute this to a decline in preventative health campaigns and gaps in sexual health education. Meanwhile, in Spain, health authorities have declared a measles outbreak in Tenerife closed after five local cases were identified following a visit by a child from the United Kingdom.
