Health officials launch campaign to combat rising head and neck cancers

A new public health campaign titled ‘Nie odbieraj sobie głosu’ (Do not take away your voice) has been launched in Poland to increase awareness of head and neck cancers. The initiative is a collaboration between the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate, the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education, and the National Institute of Oncology.

Health officials are highlighting an epidemiological phenomenon: a rise in head and neck cancer cases among individuals under 40 who have no history of smoking or alcohol abuse. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is identified as a primary cause of many oral and throat cancers in developed nations. Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, the Chief Sanitary Inspector, emphasized that HPV vaccination is a highly effective preventative measure for both women and men, noting successful elimination models in countries like Australia, Denmark, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Parallel to awareness efforts, research published in ‘Frontiers in Oral Health’ highlights significant gaps in medical education regarding oral cancer. A review of 39 studies by researchers from The University of Western Australia indicates that dentists and students often lack sufficient training in recognizing suspicious mucosal changes and performing necessary clinical examinations, such as lymph node palpation. This educational deficit contributes to delays in diagnosis and patient referrals.
