Head and neck cancer awareness in Poland

Head and neck cancer awareness efforts have intensified in Poland following reports of rising incidence rates, including a 20 percent increase in the Świętokrzyskie region. Medical professionals have warned that symptoms such as persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, and non-healing mouth sores are frequently mistaken for common infections, making early detection vital for curative treatment.

In response, health officials launched the ‘Nie odbieraj sobie głosu’ (Do not take away your voice) campaign, a collaboration between the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate, the Medical Center for Postgraduate Education, and the National Institute of Oncology. The initiative highlights a growing trend of cancer cases among individuals under 40 who do not smoke or consume alcohol, pointing to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as a primary cause.

While officials emphasize HPV vaccination as a highly effective preventative measure, research indicates significant gaps in medical education. Studies suggest that dentists and students often lack sufficient training in recognizing suspicious mucosal changes and performing clinical examinations, which can lead to delays in diagnosis and patient referrals.
