Health officials monitor Coxsackie virus and human rabies cases

Health authorities in Bolivia and Venezuela are monitoring different viral outbreaks. In Tarija, Bolivia, National Director of Epidemiology Roberto Márquez reported that there are currently no confirmed cases of Coxsackie virus in the region. However, he has urged the public, particularly parents of children aged 5 to 10, to reinforce personal hygiene and handwashing to prevent transmission, noting that the virus has appeared in La Paz, Oruro, and Chuquisaca.

In Venezuela, a case of human rabies was detected in a 14-year-old in Tumeremo, Sifontes municipality, following a bite from a wild animal. Infectologist Marco Hurtado noted that six human rabies cases have been recorded in the country so far in 2026, with five occurring in Zulia state. Experts emphasize that rabies is highly fatal and can be transmitted through saliva via bites or contact with mucous membranes and open wounds.
