Health risks associated with improper dietary supplement use

Health experts are warning against common mistakes in the consumption of dietary supplements, noting that even natural products can pose significant health risks if misused. Experts from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) emphasize that supplements should not be used to compensate for a poor diet, as they lack essential nutrients like fiber and protein found in whole foods.

Key risks include consuming supplements without professional medical guidance, combining multiple products that share identical ingredients, and exceeding recommended dosages. Overconsumption can lead to liver and kidney toxicity, as well as severe side effects.

Specific substances can cause gastrointestinal issues when taken in excess. For instance, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) notes that high doses of iron can cause constipation, nausea, and abdominal pain. Excessive calcium intake may lead to constipation, bloating, and hypercalcemia. Additionally, prolonged excessive intake of Vitamin D can trigger hypercalcemia by increasing intestinal calcium absorption, further contributing to digestive complications.
