Health experts warn against risks of prolonged sitting

Scientific studies indicate that prolonged sitting poses an independent health risk, even for individuals who maintain a healthy weight and regular exercise routines. The World Health Organization notes that 60-85% of the global population is considered sedentary, defined as walking less than 30 minutes a day or less than 20 minutes at a sustained pace.

To combat back pain and the effects of sedentary behavior, experts suggest regular movement. Research published in JAMA Network Open suggests an ideal goal of walking at least 100 minutes per day. Specialists recommend breaking this goal into smaller segments, such as 20-minute walks throughout the day, to provide necessary stimulation to the spinal column.

Morning walks can help distribute the fluid load in intervertebral discs accumulated during sleep, reducing morning stiffness. Additionally, taking active breaks during work hours is essential to counteract the effects of gravity and prolonged sitting. While traditional remedies like heat or topical applications may offer temporary relief for muscle spasms, they do not address the underlying causes of spinal issues.
