Health risks of sedentary behavior

Overview

Medical experts have highlighted the physical health risks associated with sedentary behavior and prolonged inactivity. Orthopedic specialist Dr. Ioan Stan warns that extended periods of sitting can lead to muscle imbalances, posture issues, and back pain by reducing the engagement of key muscle groups like the quadriceps and glutes.

Inactivity also poses circulatory risks. A lack of calf contractions can diminish the ‘muscle pump’ effect, potentially causing fatigue, swelling, or deep vein thrombosis. For managing back pain, experts advise against extended bed rest, suggesting instead that maintaining light, tolerable activity is more beneficial for recovery than total immobility.

Recent scientific studies indicate that prolonged sitting poses an independent health risk, even for individuals who maintain a healthy weight and regular exercise routines. The World Health Organization notes that 60-85% of the global population is considered sedentary, defined as walking less than 30 minutes a day or less than 20 minutes at a sustained pace.

To combat these effects, research published in JAMA Network Open suggests an ideal goal of walking at least 100 minutes per day, ideally broken into smaller segments such as 20-minute walks to provide necessary stimulation to the spinal column. Specialists note that morning walks can help distribute the fluid load in intervertebral discs accumulated during sleep, reducing stiffness. While heat or topical applications may offer temporary relief for muscle spasms, they do not address the underlying causes of spinal issues.
